Toxicological Evaluation of the Leaves of Mangifera indica L. (Mango) on Albino Rats (Rattus norvegicus)

The increasing use of plant-based medicines necessitates safety evaluations all medicinal plants. This study evaluated the effects mango (Mangifera indica) leaf extracts on albino rats (Rattus norvegicus). phytochemistry plant’s extract was evaluated, followed by a determination its acute toxicity using 24 rats. Thereafter, chronic determined another set rats, separated into four groups six each. Rats in group 1 (the control) were administered distilled water, while 2, 3, and 4 received daily doses 1000, 2000, 3000 mg kg-1 body weight, respectively. rats’ weights reactions monitored for 90 days before blood, liver, kidney samples collected hematological histopathological examinations. revealed phenols, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides, saponins. test recorded no mortality at up to 5000 kg-1, behaved normally, except one that sluggish. significant (p>0.05) weight difference between control treated packed cell volume, hemoglobin, red white blood cells fed 2000 significantly altered (p<0.05), lymphocytes exhibited alterations any groups. livers dose-dependent necrosis, whereas their kidneys showed atrophy epithelial degeneration. results obtained suggest single dose is not harmful, but repeated high-concentration dosing long time may result toxicity.
